Back to Political Basics - Something Inside So Strong

So I have spent a great deal of time this week at the Children's Defense Fund's Freedom School here at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland. What a wonderful program that believes in children, who often don't belive in themselves.

In my time with them this week they children sang this wonderful song "Something Inside So Strong" by Labi Siffre. The song was inspired by at TV documentary Siffre viewed in 1985, in which a white soldier was seen shooting at black children. Appalled, Siffre penned the song as an anti-Apartheid anthem. In this song he advises Africans to stand tall in the face of adversity.

Today, in this world of injustice, where so many of us are still judge by the color of our skin and not by the content of our character, we need to stand tall. It is our faith which carried us across the seas as we were packed in boats. It is our faith which helped us to endure the whip and lash. It is our faith which helped to stand before water hoses and barking dogs. Today, deeply rooted in our faith, we must continue to stand in the face of adversity and injustice until we remember our nations governmental call in OUR Decleration of Indepedance...

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. I worked at the Freedom School associated with St. James UMC in KC, MO last summer, and I can honestly say it was one of the most enriching experiences of my life as an educator. Thanks for the thought provoking post!
